This is a wonderful shotgun with excellent barrels. The wood is beautiful but needs a checkering pick up and new oil finish to really show off its merits. The gun is tight on face and features near mirror bores with plenty of choke in the left barrel. The London nitro proof is from 2006 and is 89mm which is 3 1/2".

Goose and Ducks (and clays!) Beware!!!

I must point out that 10g. nitro proofed 3 1/2" hammer guns with choke in the left barrel are extremely hard to find and this one with the bonus of being by one of Scotland's finest Edinburgh makers.

J.D. Dougal was a true gunmaker and he built guns on his own patent known as the "Lockfast." With a cam that as the gun is closed moves the action tight against the breech it is not only unique but very effective.

The quality of craftsmanship in this gun is extremely high. I really appreciate the skill, engineering, and craftsmanship it took to build them and this is an outstanding example.

T. Murcott 10g. top lever hammer of high quality and ready for restoration ~ 36" barrels!
Hammerguns

Theophilus Murcott is quite famous for being the inventor of the first production hammerless shotgun. He was granted this patent in 1871. They were purchased and closed by W. W. Greener in 1878.

This would make a great project as I know it would turn out to be something really special. This in its day was a very high crafted gun. I love the elegant 36" barrels!

A full restoration would include back boring the barrels for pitting and to add choke, browning of the barrels, rejoin, replace two screws, and complete wood restoration. Finished this would be a very special gun.

Would look great now over the hunting lodge mantel!

James Purdey top lever bar in wood in its makers case ~ Purdey letter states that this gun was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite as one of a trio

One of a trio this fine Purdey was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite and was later owned by the Honorable Gerald Walsh. See Purdey letter in the photo's.

Stunning marble cake wood and balance and very modern dimensions make this a very desirable Purdey. I am especially enamored with the bar in wood action, the most difficult to stock and the most expensive choice in the Purdey catalog. In the right barrel towards the muzzle there is a small area of pitting but in the area where there is very little pressure and was obviously there when the barrels were nitro proofed in 2012.

This gun is beautifully presented in its period oak and leather case.

*Note this gun still retains its full and full chokes allowing the new owner to easily have them opened to any favorite combination. We can arrange for this at no extra charge.

Island lock (note that wood goes all the way around the lock) Purdey's are considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and ergonomic of hammer gun designs. This Purdey offers excellent 2 3/4" nitro proofed barrels with great wall thickness for the period. The wood is not fancy but well done and has modern dimensions good for most. The LOP actually might be a bit long for some but we can easily make it shorter.

Finding quality high grade English hammer doubles is getting harder for us to find every year so I am pleased to offer my clients this opportunity.

Unlike his brother Charles, Alfred Lancaster it appears to me to have only built high grade guns as all the ones we have had over the years were all high grade. This is no exception. If you have not tried a side lever opening gun you should. They are a joy to operate.

Field ready this will be a joy to hunt and shoot! When afield there is always a point in the day when I sit and rest with my dog and appreciate my immediate blessings. These include the sky, the clouds, the smell of sage and the stunning views. I acknowledge the love I have for my four footed companions and partners who are at my side. Without exception I acknowledge the stunningly beautiful shotgun between my hands which combines history, craftsmanship, function, and beauty.

This gun while in some ways plain, has many features to be appreciated. The first I would mention is that it was built by the esteemed maker Harris Holland @ 1876. It was this year that Harris took his nephew Henry Holland on as partner and the name of the business was changed to "Holland & Holland." Henry undoubtedly spent many hours himself building this fine shotgun.

This shotgun features original and nitro proofed barrels and the very ergonomic side lever opening lever. While just border engraved this Holland will perform beautifully in the field with stock dimensions that will fit many.

You may not have heard of Adam's but they are a well known maker in the UK and well respected. It is at a quality of a Purdey hammer double and can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of the Purdey so this is the gun for the hunter that wants quality on the beer budget. Henry Nock made guns for the English nobility, the military, and hunters. Nock later became Wilkinson Sword. I use to shave with a Wilkinson razor! Yes, the same company.

This is a quality gun and very shoot-able being in nice condition. A close examination of the proof marks leads me to believe this gun was built by Wilkinson under the Nock name on or after 1813.

Parker hammer guns that have not been messed with are getting harder to fine, especially ones that would make good field guns with the RST ammunition.

This gun has some pitting in the bores that should be cleaned up. With their massive thickness this should not be a problem. I would recommend putting it properly back on face also.

We can arrange for this work if you would like us to contract the restoration.

This is a great little 16g. hammer gun built by the leader of the world in Edwardian hammer doubles. Their bar in wood gun was their most expensive model and is a very rare find in 16g.

With sleeved and reproofed steel barrels this gun has been given a new life and is ready for the field.

16 Gauge English hammer doubles are rare to begin with but to find one by the esteemed John Dickson of Edinburgh is an extra special day.

This little gun is light but spry and handles well. I like the ornamentation on the trigger guard. Someone in the shop asked me what that was for and I said what I believe at least "just for pretty." Pretty is a worth while thing in my book.

You know this wonderful gun is plain as plain can be but I like it. Why? It is well balanced and feels extremely well between the hands.

I do appreciate the side-lever which I find very easy to use and also the original Damascus barrels.

Not all of our guns call to me to take them afield but this one certainly does and it is one of our cheaper guns which goes to show something, more expensive is not always better.

The price reflects a few minor but present pit's in the bores and the rather plain wood and silvers pad. A leather covered pad would certainly dress this girl next door up a bit.

Some pitting the bores but it is possible with some careful barrel work this could be a good shooter again.

The barrels are marked for Leopold Bernard - the father of Damascus barrel making.

Engraving shows some ware but is outstanding. I love the sculpted hammers. For this price it is a great example of pin fire guns and looks great just hanging around the gun room.

This outstanding Rigby is a real sweetheart. Light and lean with stunning wood, engraving, and barrels. Nicely fitted in its makers case this classic rising bite gun is a very hard to find gun in the vintage gun world as so few were actually made and of those most were double rifles.

I am told by Rigby they are making these again but I did not get a quote on what a new one would cost. Anyone know? I suspect (actually I know) ours is a bargain in comparison. The barrels like the rest of the gun are excellent in like new condition.

William Evans Side lock in excellent condition
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

William Evans worked for James Purdey and then Holland and Holland until he went out on his own in London in 1883. He was proud of his Purdey experience and put on the rib of many of his guns "William Evans from Purdey's. Purdey no doubt was not to happy about this but they could do little as they had advertised themselves in the same way near their beginning by advertising "James Purdey from Manton's."

This sidelock is in great condition and a super value in a London sidelock. It is tight on face and has very nice bores with no pitting. The gun was completed in 1954.

*Note this gun has great stock dimensions for many.

Completed in 1891 this high quality Grant features wonderful engraving and super stock dimensions for many. Stephen Grant worked for Boss & Co. for years before opening next door to them to become a friendly competitor. It is rumored that when one maker was under the gun to finish an order the other would help out. They certainly built British BEST guns and this is an excellent example.

This gun was built in the year 1896 and one just has to look at a shotgun like this and wonder how they did it. Highest craftsmanship is what turns me on and this gun does that. The action is lightly brushed but not bad and I have to admit the minimal engraving lends itself to its elegant lines. Best of all it handles and balances beautifully. Some buyers tell us they cannot afford a high grade English sidelock and I often tell them if they are patient we can find them a nice sidelock in the boxlock price range. This is one of those guns. Mark this one a bargain.

This is a very nice Lancaster featuring the self opening mechanism. It is ready for the field. These guns have received a bum wrap as they have been called "Wrist breakers" as they were supposedly hard to close. When you close these it is cocking the main springs after firing. I find them no harder to close than a Purdey, not a big deal. The secret, as in Purdey's, is knowing how to snap the gun closed. Learn this trick and it is easy. This gun is very high quality at any price.

Although you may not be familiar with the name, Rosson of Norwich is an old and respected gun maker in England.

Great stock dimensions for many combined with a useful choking and excellent wall thickness makes this little and light English sidelock a real find.

I do feel it was when new ( I believe the ninth gun built in 1933) a semi-pistol grip gun and it has since been expertly converted to a straight grip.

I was told by the last owner this gun when new was over $20,000. And now it is still in near new condition but at a super value. Considered the top of the Spanish built guns this Garbi features bushed firing pins, an articulated front trigger, and chopper-lump barrels. These are features to be expected on a Spanish BEST and this gun has them all. On top of these features however is my favorite thing, stunningly beautiful and elegant wood! I have been doing stock finish and repair on the best of the English guns for near 30 years ( where does the time go?) and I have to say that this Garbi has an excellent stock job.

What a fabulous little and light 16g. by this premier maker. Which seldom happens, we received this lithe magic wand in its original makers case, numbed to the gun. Really this Holland has it all, balance, stock dimensions, and simple classic elegance. Sometimes we are convinced a fine shotgun has to be covered in engraving and fancy wood to be the best. Boss 20g. Sidelock in exceptional condition and investment grade original. Featuring 28”whitworth steel barrels, 75% case color, 98% blue, in its makers case. This petite flower weighs in at 5 lbs. 4.5 oz., lighter than many 28 gauges. Stocked to the fences, assisted opening, iconic and crisp Boss single trigger, chopper-lump barrels, and stunning wood with super dimensions, this Boss has all and more of what we would expect from a Boss. What I expect most of all from Boss is what I think is their true trade mark, “Balance.” Let me tell you, get this gun between your hands and you will not want to let it go as you would feel your letting go of a part of yourself.

Twenty gauge Boss doubles are like prime real estate. They seldom come up for sale, are priced at the top of the market, and there are never any regrets in owning as they are always worth what you paid and more. A solid investment at $67000.00

This little Smith features special ordered single trigger and auto ejectors. I am 60 and I remember this gun when the neigbor friend showed it to me in my early teens. She is 80 now and has asked me to sell it. It was her grandfathers and she said he bought it new. There is a great story she related to me to go with the gun.

This is in excellent condition! The only thing we could find was a very small crack that was properly repaired in the forend wood near where it meets the metal. It is very hard to see now at all.

Does anyone remember the old "Black Velvet" whiskey ads? The one with the stunning woman in the black dress? Seeing this gun in the rack brings forth the same response from seeing that ad… …Let me hold you!

I just looked it up in the Dickson book by Dallas and it says it was competed August 13th 1893. The new barrels appear to be by the maker.

While this fine Ideal grade (pronounced "EE-DEE-ELL") is sound and field ready it does have a fair amount of handling marks in the wood and no case color remaining, thus the very fair price for this grade.

This model features the outstanding rising third bite and is built on the respected and radiused trigger plate action. Using coil main springs the internal hammers virtually never fail to fall. As far as I know these guns were never retailed in the USA.

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns.

Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%.

This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

There is something about these Scottish guns that just captivate me. The understated Teutonic use of horn and stock accents that give the guns an ever so slightly different look than the guns from England. The attention to detail, high craftsmanship, and balance I have always admired and this is fantastic example from one of Edinburgh's most famous makers.

I love this shotgun! Great balance, superb craftsmanship, wood, engraving, and even more that little " je ne sais quoi" that seems to follow guns made in Scotland. Something magical.

Definable and undeniable are the great stock dimensions for many. The chokes are tight but for $75.00 a tube we can make them anything you would like to order.

Having been lucky enough to see my share of roosters exiting stage left over the farmer’s fence I really appreciate and love this makers trade label. I love it so much I have one framed and hanging in my office.

William Evans "Best" Boxlock ejector with wonderful wood
Boxlocks
12 gauge
3042

William Evans struck out on his own as a gunmaker in London in 1883. We know he worked previously for James Purdey and then 12 years with Holland & Holland. At the turn of the century he was known for offering “BEST” quality boxlock and sidelock guns. Interesting to me is the price in 1900 was the same on either, 49 pounds!

I had wondered what was meant by a "BEST" boxlock as in our general trade a best gun is by part of the definition, a sidelock.

This gun has helped me understand what William Evans was talking about when they would advertise “BEST” boxlocks. I dissembled this gun and found inside many features found on London “BEST” sidelocks including bushed firing pins and double safety sears. Further than these features was a high degree of craftsmanship and internal finish and polishing of all internal parts. Examining the interior design and execution of the Evans "BEST" boxlock it became obvious to me they required a very high degree of skilled labor and they would cost considerably more to produce than the average Birmingham boxlock.

This example, built @ 1909, is simply a beautifully executed shotgun and a perfect example of what William Evans referred to as a “London BEST” boxlock. Typically if you can find one of these they rightfully run in a price range considerably more than the Birmingham boxlocks, usually 5-7K. This example we can offer an excellent price as I have knowledge the butt stock wrist was repaired in the past. The repair was professionally done, invisible, and may last for another 100 years but knowing this information I am compelled to list the gun at a price that if a restock was ever needed the owner would not be underwater in the gun.

Stunning engraving, balance, craftsmanship, and wood, this little beauty has much to offer its future owner.

This German gun has great full coverage engraving, side clips, cocking indicators, and extra grade wood work. Ivory inlays on the forend and drop points are a nice touch. I notice an ever so slight bulge behind the left choke only noticeable to a professional and should not be of concern. With a re-blue this could be removed.

This great little English double has tons of original case color remaining indicating it has seen very little use. Checking the trigger pulls I was impressed with the super strong in time ejectors and the very nice and crisp triggers.

While on the heavier side I will tell you I was very surprised to see the weight on the scale. It is so well balanced I had guessed it would weigh 6 lbs. 10 oz. .

The case is somewhat tatty on the outside but does appear to be original to the gun which is great. The Horn extension could easily be removed and replaced with a pad and we can arrange for this if you would like.

Made between 1903 and 1904 this great boxlock has a lot to offer for the money including heavy proofs. In a gun of this weight I personally would be happy just using the 2.5" 1 oz. shells but at least if one wanted, having 3" proofs, one could use American 2 3/4" shells.

This gun is tight with great bores and ready for the field. Barrels ring like chimes and have great wall thickness. She carries her share of bruises and scrapes from a sporting life in the field but these do nothing to suppress her enthusiasm to be afield again. A great entry level shotgun for a first time SxS upland double gunner. Let this experienced mature French madame get you hooked on the double gun life! * You will see on the left barrel a stamp that says "Sauer." This for some unknown reason was added at some point in her history. This fine french shotgun is not a Sauer showing clear Saint Etienne French proofs.

German gunsmith Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse beginning in 1824, after conducted multiple experiments in 1836 produced the first complete center fire gun. The lever not only moves the barrels to the right but when closing cams the barrels back into the breech face. This gun won the NRA Foundation trophy at the Celebration of Fine Guns in San Francisco.

This will make an excellent addition to any collection and or display. I can see it directly next to a Blaser rifle, the beginning and the current state of the art side by side!

This is a great example of a grade 4 Manufrance Ideal. These round actions while built differently than John Dickson guns are a true trigger plate action and are extremely ergonomic, reliable, and a joy to carry and behold.

As far as I know Manufrance Ideals were never retailed here in the USA but thankfully a few have been brought back by soldiers and sportsman over the years.

*Note that these Ideal guns have besides the classic Purdey patent double under bite a rising third bite similar to the classic and coveted Rigby patent.

Do you like French wine and food like me? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice.

Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic.

If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why.

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

Finding 28g. vintage English doubles is as ( the English like to say) rare as rocking horse shit! I wish I could just order up as many as I would like as they sell quickly. I suspect this gem will be like the others we have had and be out of the shop in no time ~ so don't procrastinate on this one!

These small bore guns in England were often for a young man or woman to learn on so they would cut the stock shorter when they were starting out, save the original wood, and put it back on when they became older and to their adult size. The trouble with this system is the piece of wood was often lost in the intervening years. In this case the piece was retained and is now attached for a perfect match. The best laid plans do work out sometimes.

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

Walter Locke rifles were made for them by Westley Richards. This gun is suitable for any dangerous game, Jumbo on down. The bore is excellent. This would make an excellent working rifle to take to Africa. Notice the extra heavy reinforced barrels and the 10 lbs. 8 oz. weight. The gun is very well made and features disk set strikers, large double under lugs and Greener style cross bolt safety third bite. Our double rifle gunsmith Ken Owen checked the regulation and supplied the load given on the target shown here. A great shooting large bore English double rifle.

This is a very unusual and rare Holland double rifle that while chambered for the standard 500 3 1/4" shells has a very tight bore around .497 with shallow rifling. The bores are basically bright and are in good condition with only some light pitting places.

The wood is beautiful and in excellent condition. The metal and engraving the same with even some case hardening remaining. Note the action has side clips and the extended top tang over the comb!

We have a copy of factory letter to go with this fine rifle.

I have to say first of all that this rifle has an excellent bore! It is very bright with sharp rifling.

The .275 High Velocity is one of the icons of Rigby, that and their .416. It was made rather famous by Captain "Karamojo" Bell who is said to have used this caliber on over one thousand elephants. Of course nearly any high velocity round can kill anything if the bullet placement is precise. It is well known that the captain was an excellent shot and also understood the anatomy of the animals he hunted allowing for perfect bullet placement. This quote from Wikipedia "Bell shot 1,011[13] elephants during his career; all of them bulls apart from 28 cows. He is noted for using smaller calibre bullets[15][16] rather than the heavy recoiling, larger calibre bullets that were popular with other big game hunters.[17] Around 800 of his kills were made with Mauser 98 rifles chambered for the .275 Rigby (using the standard military 173 grain FMJ loading), which today is considered to be too small for elephants, and are no longer legal for dangerous African game; Bell preferred smaller calibers because, besides being lighter rifles to carry, they recoiled less and therefore are quicker to the second shot." Go to this site and read about the fine captain. It reads like a real version of a H. Rider Haggard novel! Besides his famous exploits as a big game hunter in Africa he also was a gold miner in the Alaska gold rush, a solider in the Boer war, and a fighter pilot in WWI.

I could go on about Bell all day. This rifle we are selling while similar is not one of his rifles. I did have the pleasure of owning one of Bell's .275 Rigby's but alas I was talked out of it at some point and before I could use it for a hunt much to my regrets.

Our rifle has a great bore and field ready. We had the Rigby records checked and they tell us :

Mauser Sporting H.V. Capt. S.J. Loder 23 December 1958 .275 H.V. 25" barrel 15 1/4" lop Sighting - Standing & 2 leaves 1.2.3

A nice bore on this saddle ring carbine. There is a small slip of wood missing in the stock on the left side of the receiver. The front site is obviously not original but effective. This 1894 dates from 1898.

Growing up here in the west we grew up as boys with plastic cap rifles modeled after this classic and I at that point dreamed of owning the real "McCoy." I did get one before I was 21 and kept it many years but then let it go when I realized it was not seeing a lot of use.

If you never had one and always wanted one here is the real cowboy rifle, meant to be carried horse back and ride the range!

Turnbull restoration informed me they can install the correct sights.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

T. Murcott 10g. top lever hammer of high quality and ready for restoration ~ 36" barrels!
Rust & Dust

Theophilus Murcott is quite famous for being the inventor of the first production hammerless shotgun. He was granted this patent in 1871. They were purchased and closed by W. W. Greener in 1878.

This would make a great project as I know it would turn out to be something really special. This in its day was a very high crafted gun. I love the elegant 36" barrels!

A full restoration would include back boring the barrels for pitting and to add choke, browning of the barrels, rejoin, replace two screws, and complete wood restoration. Finished this would be a very special gun.

Would look great now over the hunting lodge mantel!

A bit rough around the edges but for the price this gun has a lot to offer. Tight on face, good trigger pulls, and ejectors work fine. Note the weight! Under 6 lbs.

This is a project worth doing especially if you are a stock maker. The butt has been replaced at some point in its history and while functional and not a bad job it does not meet up to the quality level that this great gun was built to.

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing. This was a project I never got too and worthy . I am open to trades.:)

Ever so slightly off face but usable as is. Stock is sound but with some minor repairs. Some light pitting but plenty of wall thickness. I detect a very repairable crack (not through) in the wrist which should be attended to soon.

When you have a beautiful woman in your hands you know it. When you have a beautiful gun in your hands you know it also. This is a beauty. High grade, best made, and between the hands, like that girl, you wont want to let her go!

You may not have heard of Adam's but they are a well known maker in the UK and well respected. It is at a quality of a Purdey hammer double and can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of the Purdey so this is the gun for the hunter that wants quality on the beer budget. These kind of guns are getting harder and harder for me to find!
